"Avocado Qiyuan Orchard": the orchard is named after the English word avocado ("Apokale" in Chinese), and because it sits in Zhuqi, a happy little town at the foot of Alishan in Chiayi, it is called Qiyuan. Somewhere in this little town is an orchard growing bountiful fruit called the "happiness fruit," the avocado, and it has also nurtured an avocado expert: Shen Shizheng.
A-Zheng was originally a professional steam boiler maker and repair technician. In 101 he returned home to farm. Pained to see his aging parents struggling with the avocado orchard they had worked on all their lives, he quit his job to farm, and with help from the Zhuqi Farmers' Association he went into avocado growing. He is now the leader of the production and marketing group.
He is now known locally as the "Avocado Expert." Having successfully returned home to grow avocados and changed careers, A-Zheng holds to the idea of "mutual respect with the land." "A boiler is the heart of a factory," and the heart of the avocado industry is "flowering and fruit setting." As a farming newcomer, he points straight to the importance of the producer's dedication and care in cultivation and management. He insists on cover-crop cultivation, letting avocado trees grow naturally and protecting the ecological balance. Cutting the grass by hand not only loosens the soil and improves airflow, promoting root growth, but also supports orchard management, growing safe, tasty and healthy avocados so everyone can eat well and with peace of mind.
