Event introduction

"Fumo" means "Formosa," the estate owner's own aspiration, hoping his coffee will one day become synonymous with Taiwan high-mountain coffee. After retiring from the bank in 2006, the estate owner returned to his hometown. Unlike most of the other "young folks" growing coffee on Alishan, Zeng Yongli, a retiree from a financial insti-

tution, started the second half of his life with coffee after returning to his family home in Meishan. The place already had excellent natural conditions, and with carefully managed natural farming, it won the Grand Prize (Champion) in the 2012 Taiwan Coffee Festival specialty bean competition, pushing Fumo Coffee Estate's fame to its peak.

Fumo Coffee Estate is in Longyan Village, Meishan Township, at about 1100 meters elevation, with about 0.6 hectares planted. The variety has gradually been changed from the original Typica to SL-34. For post-processing, Fumo Coffee Estate offers washed, honey and natural processes. Different processing leads to different fermentation levels and affects roasting differently. Fumo's washed beans are bright and clear, with a floral and fresh finish; honey process beans have a nutty aroma and strong fruit notes; natural process beans ferment more and tend toward a wine-like flavor.

Tasting rich coffee in an old house is a signature of Fumo Coffee Estate. This Fujian-style courtyard house is over 70 years old and well preserved, with its wooden windows, doors, beams and pillars still in their original state. The owner smiles and says, "It has stood firm through several earthquakes." A coffee bar is set up in the corridor between the main hall and the right wing, with a few wooden tables and chairs in the front yard. The village chief's wife thoughtfully makes coffee jelly, paired with seasonal fruit that changes with the seasons. Sipping fragrant high-mountain coffee in a courtyard house surrounded by green mountains, listening to the owner's coffee stories, as mountain breezes blow, leaves rustle and mist rises in front, isn't this the paradise from Tao Yuanming's "Peach Blossom Spring"?
